WIC clients are able to go to authorized grocery stores within Saginaw County and redeem their food benefits using the new EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card.  As they purchase food items, the items are removed electronically from their card until it is depleted or the time limit for that month has expired.  The card is loaded from WIC every 3 months.  After 3 months, the client must go back to the clinic for nutrition education and to have their card re-loaded.  Clients generally must be recertified every 6months or twice a year to remain on the program.  Nutrition counseling by a dietitian or nutritionist is available by appointment for WIC clients.

Beginning August 1, 2009, the WIC Program will be introducing new food benefits to the program.  WIC will now have fresh fruits and vegetable vouchers, whole grain bread or tortillas, canned beans and infant jarred fruits and vegetables for infants 6 months to 11months of age.  The breastfeeding package for women who exclusively breastfeed their infants will now be given more food than ever before seen in the program’s history.  The encouragement of breastfeeding is the top priority of the program.
