Household Special Waste Collection Program

Some household waste can lead to contamination of groundwater, well water, or other water sources when spilled on the ground, poured down the drain, or placed in trash containers. To prevent this, collected materials will be properly and safely disposed at a licensed hazardous waste facility. This is your opportunity to safely and properly dispose of most special waste you may have in your home, including:

Automotive Products
spray paints
auto polishes and waxes
battery acid
   motor oil

Pennzoil will collect for a small fee:
 transmission fluid
oil filters
antifreeze
Cleaning Products
drain cleaners
floor waxes
furniture polishes
bleach and ammonia products
oven cleaners
solvents and degreasers

Paint Products
paint thinner
oil-based paints
brush cleaners
paint strippers
spray cans
lacquers and varnishes
Personal and Health Care Products
hair spray
dyes
shoe polish
aerosols
nail polishes and removers
outdated medications

Garden Products
bug sprays
ant poisons
insecticide powders
fertilizers
weed killers
poisoned baits

Please call 989-758-3686 to set up an appointment to drop off chemicals at our next collection. You will be asked about chemicals you wish to dispose of. Your special waste will be sorted and packed for disposal by trained environmental professionals. This is a free service supported by funding from the Dow Chemical Company Foundation.  However, appointments are necessary to maintain a smooth and safe flow of traffic through the collection sites.

Materials accepted include oil based paints, thinners, insecticides, lawn care products, some automotive products, solvents, cleaning products, dyes, nail polish and outdated medications. Antifreeze and car batteries can be recycled and are not accepted. Latex paint can be disposed of properly by taking the lid off the can and letting the product dry out. You can speed this process by adding absorbent material, such as newspaper strips, sawdust or kitty litter. Once the latex paint is dried up, place the can inside a garbage bag and dispose of through your regular trash pickup. It is illegal to dispose of oil base paint at the landfill - these are accepted at special waste collections.

Another alternative for disposal of your latex and oil-based paints is the Mid Michigan Waste Authority's Paint ReNew program.  Recycle your useable paint by calling (989) 781-9555 for Saginaw County drop off sites and operating hours.
